The in vitro production of biofunctional oligosaccharides requires the synthesis of longer sugar chains which consist of several different monosaccharides. The most efficient way to synthesize these structures is via cascade reactions in a one-pot synthesis. This approach requires enzymes which consecutively carry out their specific reactions to build up more complex sugar structures. In an optimal one-pot cascade reaction, the necessary cofactors are regenerated.
